Praia da Marinha

 

The Praia da Marinha in the Algarve is a landscape of  reddish limestone cliffs and calm turquoise water, broken only by its curious rock formations

It has already been named one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world by the Michelin Guide, and you will usually find it in the top 10 lists of Europe's best beaches.

Thanks to its beauty, Praia da Marinha has been used as the backdrop for all sorts of adverts. It has even been used to represent Portugal as a whole.

What to see at Praia da Marinha

Its calm waters are perfect for diving, with seahorses, anemones, starfish, sea urchins, octopus and shoals of fish all putting in an appearance in this little paradise on earth.

If you get tired of diving or sunbathing on the golden sand, you can also take a boat trip out to the nearby caves.

Getting to Praia da Marinha

It sits in the Algarve town known as Lagoa, and thanks to a steep flight of 115 steps separating it from the rest of the world, even in high season it gets fewer visitors than beaches that are easier to reach.

The nearest big town is Portimão and another village close by is Silves, which hosts a popular Medieval Fair during August.
