Praia do Barranco das Canas

This famous beach belongs to the town in the Algarve called Portimão.

The beach Barranco das canas  is also known as Praia do Alemão (German Beach). Locals say the name comes from the fact that the first house built nearby belonged to a German tourist who fell in love with the landscape and made it his home.

If you search for images of the Algarve you'll almost certainly come across photos of this distinctive beach, with rocks of all sizes rising out of the water, contrasting with the blue of the sea.

What to see at Praia do Barranco das Canas

The Praia do Alemão is a comfortable, medium-sized stretch of sand with corners that are perfect for a bit of privacy or for sheltering from the wind.

Behind it, the characteristic reddish cliffs of the Algarve.

The water is clean and calm, perfect for families with young children.

Another thing that makes this beach one of the favourites among visitors to the Algarveis the absence of big developments nearby.

If you come in low season you can enjoy this beach at its most peaceful, and even try a bit of naturism if you fancy it.

You can hire sunloungers and umbrellas. Right next door, separated by large rocks, is Praia do Vau. Another lovely beach in the area.
