Lagoa, Algarve

 

Lagoa is a town in the Algarve with a distinctly rural feel, where some locals still make their living from wine-growing, market gardening and planting carob trees.

The villages that make up Lagoa boast some of the loveliest scenery in the Algarve, and we'd happily recommend a wander through any of them: Ferragudo, Benagil and Carvoeiro.

What to see in Lagoa

This municipality has around 17 km of coastline and is famous for the beauty of its beaches, its major hotel developments and several golf courses.

This is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal and in the world: the Praia da Marinha.

Despite the tourism and the development, the rural surroundings have been preserved, and Lagoa is a world away from the cosmopolitan buzz of other towns in the Algarve such as Albufeira.

The old town, with its white houses, cobbled streets and lamp posts decked with flowers, is watched over by the parish church dedicated to Our Lady of the Light.

As we mentioned, Lagoa is a wine-making town, and it enjoys an exceptional microclimate, so you can use your visit as an excuse to taste the local produce. The  Adega Cooperativa de Lagoa runs tastings and guided tours.
 

Carvoeiro

Within the boundaries of the town of Lagoa, you'll find a picturesque village bathed in turquoise waters known as Carvoeiro.

Carvoeiro is a former fishing village that has grown into one of the Algarve's big tourist draws.

It's hugely popular for family holidays, thanks to a wide choice of accommodation, and it has everything you might need packed into a fairly compact area around the town centre.

Another thing that has made it such a favourite with families is that its beach is sheltered by cliffs on either side.

Its rock formations create an intricate landscape of caves and ledges well worth exploring.
