Vilamoura is the largest privately owned holiday resort in Europe, and one of the most exclusive in Portugal.
It's the right choice if you're after a luxury base, with top-end hotels, private villas and apartments and, of course, championship-standard golf courses.
It belongs to the municipality of Loulé.
What to see in Vilamoura
Marina de Vilamoura
The Marina de Vilamoura is always buzzing. It's the nerve centre of the resort.
Around it you'll find shops, bars and restaurants of every kind. It's busy all day, but it's at night, once everyone is back from the beach, that the marina really fills up. Visitors do the rounds of the bars and restaurants and soak up the resort's nightlife.

Sports
The marina enjoys a prime location and just the right conditions for water sports and activities.
From here you can take boat trips, hire boats or windsurfing gear, and try waterskiing, jet skis, sailing, parasailing, diving and fishing.
Other activities on offer in this huge resort include tennis, horse riding, bowling, squash and a shooting club.
But the star sport among older visitors is undoubtedly golf. Vilamoura has courses in superb condition that draw thousands of players every year.
Vilamoura Casino
Just a few metres from the marina you'll find the Vilamoura Casino, with avant-garde decor in vibrant colours, gaming rooms, restaurants and a show venue.
Through the summer there are theatre events, musicals, comedy shows and other performances every night.
It's also a popular spot in December, when plenty of foreign visitors come to spend Christmas and New Year in the Algarve.

Beaches in Vilamoura
Vilamoura has a long beach that shares its name: Praia de Vilamoura.
At the far end of this beach lies neighbouring Falesia beach, which belongs to the town of Albufeira.
Roman ruins
In the Vilamoura area you'll find the Roman ruins of Cerro da Vila, where you can see the remains of several Roman baths and mosaics dating back more than 2,000 years.

Vilamoura is a small part of Loulé, in the Algarve, with plenty of hotels, a marina, a casino and golf courses.
It's a thirty-minute drive from Faro Airport and two and a half hours from the capital, Lisbon.
