Monchique stands apart from other Algarve destinations because it offers something completely different.

There are no beaches here, but there are green hills full of beautiful scenery and the calm that comes from having no big resorts.

Monchique and its hillssit right on the edge that separates the region of the Algarve from the Alentejo, and it's the peace, the quiet, the ever-present green mountains, the warmth and simplicity of the people and the slow pace of life that make it so appealing.

What to see in Monchique

This rural area is full of paths and walking routes lined with tall oaks and pines, entirely different from the rest of the Algarve.

The centre is quiet and unpretentious, just right if you enjoy browsing the traditional shops and eating in local restaurants.
 

Pico Fóia

If you're up for it, you can climb Pico Fóia(902 m) the highest point in the whole region, with spectacular views stretching from the hills all the way south to the sea. From the top you can also pick out Cabo de São Vicente to the west, Faro to the east and the Serra da Arrábida to the north.

We'd suggest packing something warmer if you decide to make this trip.
 

Hot springs in the Algarve

The Caldas de Monchique, just 6 km from the town, is a thermal spa resort, home to the only natural hot springs in the Algarve.

The therapeutic properties of these relaxing local waters have been recognised since Roman times, and they are naturally rich in bicarbonate, fluoride, silica and sodium. The caldas are a very picturesque spot, with pretty old houses and a wood of centuries-old trees.

If you are after nightlife, shopping or big events, you are better off staying in Albufeira, Monchique is not the right place for you.

Monchique is a town in the district of Faro. It lies inland in the Algarve, so there are no beaches.

Monchique is an hour's drive from Faro Airport and two hours forty-five minutes from the capital, Lisbon.

It sits on the border with the neighbouring Alentejo region and has natural attractions all of its own, including the only thermal waters in the Algarve.
