Portimão

Portimão  is a town in the Algarve located in the district of Faro.

This cosmopolitan town is one of the most complete destinations in the Algarve. It has a wide range of accommodation, sporting and cultural activities, and turquoise beaches that contrast with the reddish sand of the cliffs.

It's one of the liveliest places in the region. Its cruise port is among the busiest in the country, so thousands of visitors arrive every summer and fill up its hotels and apartments.

The Faro Airport is only 60 km away.

Portimão's necropolises

The Monte Canelas and Alcalar necropolises, both of which you can visit in Portimão, confirm that people have lived in the area since Neolithic times.

Plenty of structures and buildings also show the mark left by the Moors and the Romans in Portimão, as in many parts of Portugal.

This is also where you'll find the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, built in the 17th century to defend the Arade river.

Historic centre

The town centre is packed with shops of every kind. It's perfect for a stroll at the end of the day, after hours on the beach. In summer the shops stay open late into the night.

There's a huge choice of restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs in Portimão. And there's no shortage of night-time events during the summer.

Sport

Sport is another constant here. Summer brings beach football and volleyball championships.

It's in Portimão  which is home to the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.

Portimão Marina

The Marina de Portimão is one of the most important in the area. It takes boats of up to 50 m, with a maximum draught of 5 metres. The entrance is easy to navigate and the widest in the country.

Portimão has become a hugely popular holiday destination, largely thanks to the famous Praia da Rocha, with its vast sweep of golden sand and the distinctive rocks rising between the sea and the shore.
