The Ozadi Tavira Hotel came out of an architectural restoration project that has just won its author the most important architecture prize on the Iberian Peninsula. And for good reason: it is probably one of the most photogenic hotels you will find anywhere in the Algarve.

All the magic of this hotel comes down to respect. By keeping the 1970s architecture of the original building and adding contemporary interiors, it is earning back the respect that quite a few places to stay in the area have lost.

Where the Ozadi Tavira Hotel is

The hotel is perfectly placed. It is not tucked away in the awkward, hard-to-reach streets of central Tavira, but five minutes from them (by car, of course). The salt pans are just a few metres away, and that is where the running camps offered by this well-liked hotel head off to. The Ozadi is also only a short hop from the beach, just a few minutes by car and you will be there in no time. And if you would rather not bother driving down to the sea, the Ozadi runs a shuttle service you can make the most of.

It is also very close to the lovely historic town of Tavira, as well as Tavira Island and the Ria Formosa with its salt pans (one good idea, for example, is to head to the salt pans at sunset to take a few photos, it is a beautiful spot!

In high season, prices tend to match those of many hotels in the same bracket, but given the recent refurbishment this is probably the smarter choice.

On prices, it is worth pointing out that out of season it can be a real bargain (for example, €55 a night in January and February if you book ahead). And while the weather may not be quite so glorious then, the truth is that inside the hotel everything is lovely.

The rooms here are simply fantastic. Whether you are travelling as a couple or with the family, the Ozadi gives you plenty of options. The double rooms, for instance, come with a sofa bed for those children who are already too big to sleep with mum and dad.

What is certain is that whether you end up in a room looking over the hotel or over the back of it, it hardly matters, because the design and decor shine on their own.

Before we get into the reviews we have read, a word of warning: do not eat too much in the evening, so you can feast at the Ozadi breakfast. The hotel's rooftop terrace is one of the things well worth a mention, as the views from up there are lovely and the atmosphere is very friendly.

As for the hotel, we read a few things on TripAdvisor and similar sites that we would not pay much attention to: the hotel has just been refurbished, the staff are charming, the service is good and so is the breakfast.

The hotel has several draws that make it fantastic for any leisure stay.

• Among other things, there is help for parents, with a childcare service at the Kids Club. They run activities for children all year round. Just ask in advance or when you arrive at the hotel.

• The Orangea Bistro restauranthas one of the most special spaces in the hotel. It sits above the pool area, with a pretty outlook and a bright, contemporary feel. There is a menu of tapas and snacks during the day, and in the evening the mood turns more intimate, with a menu of Mediterranean-inspired dishes. There is the fantastic pool too, with the much-loved restaurant right beside it (the Orangea).

• Fitness: there's a space for anyone who doesn't want to miss a single day of training, with a gym floor to help you keep up your routine.
• Running Training Camp at the Ozadi – One of the Ozadi's real quirks and innovations in Tavira is its training camps for runners. They're three-day packages that include two nights' accommodation, breakfasts and access to all the Running Training Camp activities. The idea is to spend your day learning training strategies from experts, putting in the miles and then recovering in a room at the Ozadi.
