Right in the heart of the Portuguese Algarve, in the town of Portimão, you'll find the Forte de Santa Catarina.
It was built on the orders of Philip III to protect the village and the harbour of Portimão.
It dominates the view over one side of Praia da Rocha and the River Arade, and visitors to the area come to use its steps down to the beach and to enjoy the views.
A lovely sea view
On clear summer nights, the beach lit by the moon is a beautifully romantic sight, and you can take it all in from the terrace.
Inside there is a chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
